The Heralds
Ten immortal champions bound to a cycle of war and madness by an ancient oath.
The Heralds are ten semi-divine beings who serve as the champions of Adonalsium and the protectors of humanity against the Voidbringers, an ancient enemy from beyond the stars. Bound by a cosmic oath to return to the world of Nalthis every few centuries when the Desolation threatens, they fight in the name of their god, Odium's rival, while suffering immense psychological torment. Lore & Background
Before the current era, the Heralds were once mortal men and women who ascended to godhood through their connection to Adonalsium. They formed the Oathpact with the Voidbringers, agreeing to fight them repeatedly until the enemy was defeated or humanity was saved. However, each time they return from the Cognitive Realm to fight a Desolation, they are forced to relive their past failures and traumas, slowly driving them insane. This curse is so severe that many Heralds have chosen suicide or self-exile rather than face the battlefield again.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled across the Shattered Plains, carrying the scent of ozone and old blood. Kalak stood alone on the ridge, his armor rusted by centuries of neglect, staring at the horizon where the storm was gathering. He could feel them coming—the Voidbringers, the enemies that had haunted his dreams for ten thousand years. His hands trembled not from fear, but from the crushing weight of memory; he remembered every face he had failed to save in previous Desolations. 'I cannot do this again,' he whispered to the empty air, knowing the Oath would drag him back regardless. The sky turned a bruised purple as the first spren began to scream.
Reader's Guide
The Heralds exist at the intersection of the Physical and Cognitive Realms, drawing their power from Honor, one of the two Shards that once inhabited Roshar. Their immortality is not natural but enforced by the Oathpact; they cannot die unless they break their oaths or choose to end themselves. Historically, they have fought ten major Desolations, each cycle eroding their sanity further until only a few remain functional. Theologically, the Heralds represent the burden of divinity without true freedom. They are trapped in a loop where victory is impossible because the Voidbringers always return, and defeat means the extinction of humanity. Their suffering serves as a warning about the cost of absolute power and the nature of sacrifice. In the current timeline, their mental states have degraded to the point where some act as villains or wanderers, disconnected from their original purpose. Understanding the Heralds requires recognizing that they are not merely warriors but tragic figures caught in a cosmic mechanism designed by Adonalsium's fragmentation. Their story is one of endurance against inevitable madness.
