In the history of Scadrial, Lerasium represents the physical medium through which divine power is accessed. Created by Preservation at the Well of Ascension, this metal carries the essence of the deity. For a millennium during the Final Empire, its existence was suppressed by the Lord Ruler, who destroyed all but one bead to ensure no one else could gain the power. When discovered later, Lerasium proved to be far more than simple fuel. Consuming even a small fragment directly grants Allomantic powers, regardless of birthright. This discovery shifted the balance of power in the world, allowing rebels and heroes to artificially create new Mistborns to fight against tyranny or restore order.

Lerasium is not meant to be burned like other metals; it must be ingested directly by the user. When a person swallows even a small amount of this golden alloy, their body undergoes a profound transformation. The metal bonds with their soul, unlocking the latent capacity for Allomancy that exists within all humans on Scadrial. This process effectively turns an ordinary citizen into a Mistborn, granting them the ability to burn every other type of metal in existence. However, this power comes with significant weight. The sudden influx of divine energy can be overwhelming, requiring immense mental discipline to control without driving oneself mad. Historically, possession of Lerasium was punishable by death under the Lord Ruler's regime, as he sought to maintain his monopoly on magical might. In later eras, it became a tool for rebellion and restoration. Only those with strong wills should attempt this path. While it grants godlike potential in combat and survival, it also makes the user a target. The metal is finite and cannot be replenished easily, meaning every pellet represents a legacy that can change the fate of nations forever.

• The Lord Ruler was already a full Mistborn and Feruchemist due to his Hemalurgic spike from the Well of Ascension and his own nature; he did not use Lerasium to become a Mistborn.
• Natural Mistborn existed during the Final Empire without consuming Lerasium, though they were rare due to persecution and genetic scarcity.
