The Lord Ruler is the god-king of the Final Empire, having ruled for a thousand years after ascending at the Well of Ascension. He is believed to be the Hero of Ages, who repelled the Deepness and saved mankind, but the world was changed into its current form of falling ash and brown plants. In truth, he is Rashek, a Terrisman advisor who killed the real Hero and took his place. By combining Allomancy with Feruchemy, he gained incredible healing powers and eternal youth, which he maintained through Feruchemical bracelets. He rules with an iron fist, dividing society into nobility and skaa, and enforces his will through the Canton of Inquisition and its Steel Inquisitors—seemingly indestructible Allomancers with steel spikes driven through their eyes. The economy of the Final Empire is built on atium, a precious metal he hoards. His reign ends when Vin separates him from his Feruchemical bracelets, causing him to age rapidly, and she executes him with a spear. His last words ominously warn her of a great doom.

In Their Own Story

The Lord Ruler's presence looms over the entire novel. He is first confronted directly when Kelsier is killed by the Lord Ruler himself in a dramatic confrontation in Luthadel's city square. Later, Vin goes to the imperial palace to kill him with the Eleventh Metal, a rumored weakness. She is captured by the Canton of Inquisition but escapes with Sazed's help. In the final battle, Vin fights the Lord Ruler and recognizes him as Rashek, not the Hero of Ages. He nearly destroys her, but with hints from the Eleventh Metal and unexpected magical aid from the mists, she manages to separate him from his Feruchemical bracelets that provide constant youth. He ages rapidly, and Vin uses a spear to execute him. With his last words, he ominously warns her of a great doom. The Final Empire collapses, and Elend Venture unites Luthadel under a new democratic government.
